FAQ

Common questions

Do I need to bring the whole house up to code for a small remodel?
Generally the new and altered work must meet current requirements, while unaffected existing wiring is not automatically required to change. What triggers extra work depends on what we find and what the inspector requires, and we will explain that before you commit.
Can you work with my general contractor?
Yes. We schedule rough-in and finish around framing, insulation and drywall, and we communicate directly with the contractor so inspections and other trades are not held up.
Why is the electrician needed before the drywall goes up?
Because rough-in wiring and its inspection have to happen while the framing is exposed. Getting circuits and box locations right at that stage costs far less than cutting into finished walls.
My house has old wiring. Will it all need to be replaced?
Not necessarily. Some old wiring can stay if it is in good condition and not overloaded, but things like ungrounded circuits, damaged insulation or knob-and-tube in areas being insulated are handled case by case.

More about electrical remodels and renovations

Remodel electrical is different from new construction. Walls are finished, ceilings are low, and the existing wiring may be decades old and undocumented. Our job is to find out what is behind the surfaces, decide what can stay, and bring the affected areas up to current requirements.

In Minnesota that often means working in older houses with plaster walls, knob-and-tube remnants, undersized panels, or a basement that has never had proper circuits. We handle the rough-in before drywall and the finish work after paint, and we coordinate with your general contractor so inspections and trades line up.

Whether you are the homeowner running the project or the builder managing several trades, we will give you a clear scope covering what is being added, what is being replaced, and what the inspector will want to see.

When you need it

  • You are gutting or reworking a kitchen and need new countertop, appliance and lighting circuits.
  • A bathroom remodel adds a fan, heated floor, vanity lighting or a relocated vanity.
  • You are finishing a basement and need receptacles, recessed lighting, smoke and CO detection, and possibly egress or sump circuits.
  • An addition, sunroom or second-story build needs new circuits and probably more panel capacity.
  • You are opening walls in an older home and find ungrounded, cloth-covered or spliced wiring.
  • You want to rearrange rooms, move a doorway or add built-ins that disrupt existing switches and outlets.
  • Your builder needs a licensed electrician for rough-in, inspection and finish on a defined schedule.

What’s included, in detail

Scope and layout planning

Circuit counts, device locations and lighting layout are agreed before rough-in starts.

Rough-in wiring

New cable runs, boxes and circuits installed while the framing is open.

Existing wiring assessment

We check what is in the walls and flag anything that should be replaced rather than reused.

Panel capacity check

We confirm the panel and service can carry the new loads before the walls are closed.

Code-required protection

GFCI, AFCI and tamper-resistant devices installed where the rules for that room require them.

Finish and trim

Devices, cover plates, fixtures and fan hookups installed after drywall and paint.

Permit and inspections

We pull the permit and schedule rough-in and final inspections with the right inspector.

Our process

  1. Walk the project

We review plans or walk the space with you and your contractor to understand scope and sequence.

  2. Rough-in

We run wiring and set boxes ahead of insulation and drywall, then call for the rough-in inspection.

  3. Close-up and finish

Once walls are finished, we install devices, fixtures and trim.

  4. Final inspection

We test every circuit, pass the final inspection and walk you through what was changed.

More questions

Can you help choose lighting and fixture placement?
We can lay out where the circuits, boxes and switches should go and advise on what works well in the room. Final fixture selection is yours, and we will install what you choose.
