More about electrical service upgrades
An electrical service upgrade replaces the equipment where utility power enters your home: the service entrance conductors, the meter base, the main disconnect and the grounding and bonding that goes with them. The most common upgrade in Minnesota is taking an older 60A or 100A service up to 200A, though the right size depends on your home and your plans.
Service size matters because it sets the ceiling on how much your house can draw at one time. A home that was wired for a few lights and a range can struggle once you add central air, an induction cooktop, a heat pump or an EV charger. We size the new service from the actual connected and planned loads, not from a rule of thumb.
A service upgrade involves the utility as well as the electrician. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection through the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry or your city's own inspection office, and coordinate the disconnect and reconnect so you know what to expect on the day.
When you need it
- Your home still has a 60A or 100A service and you are adding central air, a heat pump, an electric range or a home EV charger.
- The meter base, service mast or weatherhead is corroded, loose, pulling away from the siding or damaged by ice and snow.
- Your insurance company or a home inspector has flagged the service equipment as outdated or unsafe.
- Breakers trip when several large loads run at once, even though the individual circuits are fine.
- You are finishing a basement, adding on or converting a garage and the new load will not fit on what you have.
- The panel is full and a subpanel alone would still leave you short on total capacity.
- You are replacing an old fuse-based or ungrounded service as part of a larger renovation.
What’s included, in detail
We work out your real demand, plus what you plan to add, so the new service is sized correctly rather than guessed.
New meter socket, mast or underground lateral connections, and service conductors suited to the new rating.
A main breaker and distribution panel matched to the service, usually replaced together.
Grounding electrode system and bonding brought up to current requirements, including water piping where applicable.
We file the permit and meet the inspector, either DLI or the city, before the utility restores power.
We arrange the disconnect and reconnect with your utility and tell you roughly how long you will be without power.
A clearly labeled panel directory and a clean work area when we leave.
Our process
- Assess
We look at your existing service, panel and meter location, and talk through current and future loads.
- Plan and permit
We size the service, confirm the utility's requirements and pull the electrical permit.
- Install
Power is shut off at the scheduled time, the new equipment is installed, and the utility is coordinated for reconnection.
- Inspect and energize
The inspector approves the work, the utility restores power, and we walk you through the new panel.
